Tropical Fruits

I tried three locally grown fruits this week: Breadfruit, Bananas and Sugar Apple...
I had been buying my Bananas at the grocery store till Ingrid made me see the error of my ways. Why wasn't I buying them from the local markets?! I certainly will from now on. Sort of tasted fruitier than the usual Bananas (sorry Unknown, doubt you would like them any better), I plan to get more to try to make Banana Ice Cream...
Sugar Apple was another big winner. This would probably be the most popular fruit on the planet if there were actually more fruit inside, rather than lots of big (easily to discard) seeds. Very sweet and, well, fruity. I will probably buy again, but they aint cheap....
And finally the Breadfruit...
I cut it into chunks and steamed it till fork tender...
then I mashed a few chunks with EVOO and Salt and enjoyed alongside some Gluten from Ma's Vegi Deli. The Breadfruit tasted exacted like Potatoes. Even He Who Likes Virginia Better Than The Virgin Islands tasted a piece and agreed it was just like Potatoes. So now I have a ton of it left to make Fries in the toaster oven...
Below is a pic of Hull Bay...
and here is a pretty flower to round out the post...
So much more to come. Bye for now.

  1. The banana looks much chunkier than our bananas. I have never heard of either of the other fruits, but now I'm so curious! Can't wait to see the breadfruit fries!

    1. They are stubbier Bananas. I am loving the Breadfruit Fries, but, gotta admit, they do taste like Potato Fries.

  2. So cool to have local tropical fruits! Those bananas look fatter than store ones too.

I'm looking forward to the banana ice cream and the bread fruit fries!

  3. How cool to be able to try all of these tropical fruits! Those bananas would make great banana ice cream ;) I hope you like it! THe sugar apple sounds fantastic and looks pretty funky! I am hoping to be able to go somewhere tropical someday and be able to sample all of the fun fruits.

The picture of Hull Bay is GORGEOUS!! Look at that water. Words can't describe the jealousy I'm feeling ;)

No WIAW post this week but I'm planning for next week! Work has been SO BUSY this week. It is our busiest weekend of the year!

    1. Yes, Breadfruit would probably be more mainstream if it were easier to work with. The Sugar Apple is weird but wonderful.

  6. He what?!?!? Must have had too much sunshine to the brain lately....

That sour apple looks like alien fruit! Do you munch around the pits? Breadfruit fries could be a worthwhile experiment for sure. And i bet the smoothie maker can handle frozen banana chunks.
I went to blythe ann's (FKA Lula's) for an ice cream for dinner the other night, a cashew based chocolate hazelnut with their awesome coconut milk whipped cream.... Too bad I can't make that at home!
I haven't been to many shows lately, I don't have friends who work for companies that do the shows any more. I was a dresser for lots of shows back in school and interning- i always thought that was more fun anyhow.
Citibike extended further up! I've gone from 84th /amsterdam down to tribeca a few times, trying to do that as much as i can before it gets too cold...!

    1. Wow, your Ice Cream dinner sounds heavenly. One of those times when I wish you could post a pic. Behind-the-scenes at fashion shows does seem more interesting. I am not getting the popularity of the new crop of Kardashian/Jenner Gigi/Bella models. Not to mention, the pics I have seen of Kanye West's clothing. I am sure you have at least two more months of biking. Brunch tomorrow?

  7. I've never had the chance to try breadfruit -it's a weird name for it, interesting to hear it tastes/textures like potatoes. Speaking of names 'He Who Likes Virginia Better Than The Virgin Islands' is epic-ly funny :)

    1. It is a weird name for a fruit. I love bread and was hoping it would taste like bread, but, alas, totally tastes like Potatoes. Sort of a blank slate really. Can be prepared sweet or savory

  8. Such interesting produce in different parts of the world! Hooray for local bananas - I bet you'll have access to them at the farmer's market year-round. I'm curious, is there an off season for the islands? As in less tourists? I would guess winter brings a lot of traffic - guess you'll have to report!

Oh Mister, I've been to VA enough to know that while nice, it can't hold a candle to tropical paradise! ;)

    1. Summer is the off season. Lots of business close down now as well due to lack of tourism/hurricane season.

The Mister was born and raised in Northern Virginia. Says he misses his 'roots'. I think he misses his toys. All my years of blogging from Virginia, nobody ever commented they wanted to visit. Not once.
