Vegan Food Fair Produce

Below is the stand where I got ripped off paying $22 for two Pineapples. The woman working the stand seemed very friendly so I thought I would do business with her. Originally, she wanted $25, but after we balked at that, she lowered the price to $22...
I still dont know how to determine when Pineapples are ripe. These looked pretty...
but turned out to be dry and tasteless. $22 down the drain...
back to the produce: lots of people were buying pieces of local Pumpkin...
some wrapped pre-sliced pieces below...
lots of preserves, sauces and liqueurs for sale...
Besides the Pineapples, I bought nine Ackees for $6, but have since had to toss three since they went moldy...
saw Passion Fruit but didnt buy any for some reason...
Did buy a bag of Ju Ju Plums for $3 as well as a $3 bag of Hibiscus...
Hibiscus was everywhere...
must be the peak of the season...
dont know if this was headed for the trash or what...
I am keeping what I bought in a bowl in the fridge and snack on pieces throughout the day...
it is like crunchy Lettuce with a sourness. Very refreshing and just a few pieces is satisfying, so I assume it must have some nutrition...
the Ju Ju Plums are also in a bowl in the fridge. The one I ate was tart, but tasty...
$5 worth of Peppers were bought from Drina's...
the fruit below is called 'Wild Pineapple'...
the guy selling it split one in half to give me a taste and amazingly it did taste exactly like Pineapple. Really neat, but I didnt buy any. The only thing I regret not buying was the Passion Fruit, but maybe it will be for sale at the Saturday market in town...
Coming up, what I did with the the Ackee. Bye for now.

    1. I thought that for $11 they must be the best Pineapples on the planet.

  2. Ha, ha! Abby Bean makes a good point. But such exotic fruit in this post! Do you ever long for a blueberry or apple? It seems like you could never get bored of the different types at your fingertips!

I am so sad about Poley. I knew that all wasn't well, but between Teddy and the uncertainty of Poley's malaise... I'm sure it was sad around your house. My neighbor's dog (not Frankie, I think I showed Boss once - he was 11) passed from a tumor on his heart days before Christmas. It's hard to handle the thought of Terra or even Remy passing on. But, I'm happy to hear that Molly is filli your heart!

    1. I dont miss Apples or Blueberries, but I have been eyeing the Grapefruits in the grocery stores. They dont sell them at local farm markets.

Thanks for the kind words about Poley. He was a great friend and phenomenal being.

  3. Man, you got so robbed on the pineapple! So much fruit I've never heard of. I read that the pineapples that are a little browner in color with the stem looking a little haggard is the sign of a ripe, or somewhat ripe pineapple. That lady probably knew those weren't that ripe. The shame.
I read between the lines above. I'm so sorry for the loss of Poley. He was such a sweetie.

    1. The Pineapple reminded me of why so many people, like myself, five up on eating fruit. It can be a real waste of money AND literally leave a bad taste in your mouth.

  4. Wow, what fun stuff! That is definitely robbery on the pineapple though. I would expect pineapples to be inexpensive in that climate? I think they are ripe when you can actually smell them through the skin? That's when I can tell. I think the skin turns more yellow than green too? I could be making that up but I think that's what I've heard.I love all of the new fruit you have been trying. It must be so fun to get to try all of these new things. I guess just avoid the $11 pineapples for now.

    1. Farmers Market Pineapples are usually $6-$7. Not sure if I will risk buying anymore ever. Papaya is safer.

  5. I read somewhere that the bottom belly button of the pineapple should be very fragrant when they are ripe...? They're expensive enough here i never buy them (but still not as much as you paid)
What an amazing assortment of fruits available!! I had no idea that hibiscus was something you could eat as is.

  6. I am so intrigued by all these fruits. I have a book that calls for ackee, Caribbean Vegan I think is the title. Never seen it in these parts. It looks like some olives mated with some banana slices. Hibiscus tea is popular here but I've never seen the actual fruit, it sounds good!

  7. Thanks for your post. I’ve been thinking about writing a very comparable post over the last couple of weeks, I’ll probably keep it short and sweet and link to this instead if thats cool. Thanks. vegan uber
