Cashews and Green Bananas

On Tuesday, I was in Natural Livity and noticed a bowl of Cashews on the counter...
apparently they were fresh picked. The owner gave me a handful to try...
I also bought a bottle of Cashew Juice. Presumably from the Cashew Apple, tastes fruity, like a mixture of Pear and Apple Juice...
the Cashews themselves, however, were not my friends. After cracking open and consuming a couple, I noticed my mouth and lips were burning and tingling. Turns out, Cashews carry the same acid as Poison Ivy and must be steamed or roasted before consumption. Raw Cashews are actually lightly steamed before hitting the market...
in other learning news, I put my Green Bananas in a pot of boiling water for 15 minutes...
after they cooled down, I peeled and ate with S & P and some Black-Eyed Peas from Natural Livity. Very starchy and bland, not at all like Bananas. Oddly, Molly loves cooked Green Bananas, but hates ripe Yellow Bananas.
So remember: no eating of fresh picked Cashews without a little steaming first. Bye for now.

  1. The cashew juice sounds so unusual and delicious! They didn't mention to cook the raw cashews? Sounds kind of unpleasant! How did they taste?
Hmm. Sounds like the green bananas might be a once and done dish. Molly eats well :)

    2. I did ask the woman at Natural Livity what I should do with the Cashews and she said I could roast them. She didnt say I had to. They tasted fine, but not worth the effort of trying to get them open, or the after effects. You might like Green Bananas, they arent at all Banana-like. I would be curious to know what you thought.

  2. Why would they leave out raw cashews? Sounds pretty irresponsible.

    1. I assume down here everyone knows better than to eat them raw. I was the idiot who didnt get the memo.

    2. They can't just make assumptions like that - especially when you specifically asked what you should do with them.

  3. I never knew what cashews looked like when just picked, let alone the poison ivy connection. So interesting. And, I've never heard of a Cashew apple!
That's also so interesting that green bananas can be steamed and eaten like that.

  4. I never knew that about cashews, how crazy! I hope that it didn't bother you too much or cause too much of a problem. The juice does look really nice and refreshing. I'm sure sweet Molly enjoyed her snack :)

    1. Molly likes to hang near by when i am cooking, just in case I accidentally drop something. Happened to be a piece of Green Banana this week. If it were regular Banana, no way would she have scarfed it up. Not even with Peanut Butter on it.
