Another Buffet Approach

We did the $28.95 AYCE Buffet at Aqua Terra in the Marriott's Frenchman's Reef this morning. Below is the entrance...
the buffet had the usual fruits  -- no Mango or Papaya like Unknown has pointed out in the past. So odd that none of the buffets have it when it is literally growing right outside the door...
the assortment of Dried Fruits and Nuts were an imaginative idea. There were even Pepitas!
I believe all breakfast buffets should have Grits and this place did them justice. Skin on top, lumps and everything...
I asked if the Oatmeal was made with milk, they said 'no', but it sure looked like it was so I avoided...
lots of non-vegan sweet breads...
with an admirable array of toppings...
more mainland fruits...
gluten-free cereals...
tropical juices...
so on to me...I had a yuuuuuge glass of Orange Juice...
I had determined ahead of time not to fill up on a Bagel, instead I went with Breakfast Potatoes and Pineapple (because I thought the Pineapple might be local, but then the Mr. said it probably wasnt cuz all their food probably came from the same supplier off island)...
and some Grits. Not the best meal value to say the least, but a very nice buffet for those who can sock away a lot of food...
service was lovely and the view from our table was pleasing but I cant justify a return...
by lunchtime I was ready to hit De Coal Pot for the 'Veggie Delight' with Steamed Vegetables and Ground Provisions (like Potatoes but local)....
after lunch I popped into Moe's Market and saw a ginormous Artichoke for $5.49. Thought I would risk it, although what it went through in transit to get here god only knows. I steamed it with an entire Lemon for an hour and it tasted surprisingly decent. The stem was fibrous, but the risk paid off...
a pretty shrub...
Hopefully will post more frequently, just having a hard time scraping together a cohesive theme for a post. Bye for now.

  1. I wouldn't go back to that place either. I've wondered about the lack of tropical fruits at some of the restaurants you've gone to myself. Weird seeing the huge bowl full of apples and oranges! The view is gorgeous, but the views everywhere you've gone are gorgeous! That artichoke looks amazing! Thanks for the reminder that it's artichoke season!

    1. I hope you take advantage of Artichoke season. They are picked only an hour or two away from you.

  2. I'm still noticing a lack of tofu scrambles - I think you should survey the island, and if there's a demand - set up shop! I haven't been to a buffet in many moons, but I love seeing you venture out!

No theme needed - island randomness is always enjoyed!

    1. The thing is, there is plenty of Tofu Scramble during the week, just on the weekends when I want to eat breakfast out that there is the dearth of options. I would open my own vegan joint if I thought for two seconds it might be popular.

  3. Theme- schameme. How about..."it's my blog and this is what i want to write about today"...? ;))
That buffet totally made money on you today. Were the potatoes good? Your masterful potatoes always looked so yummy. Still making those or too hot for the oven? Da coal pot veggie delight always looks so good. Do you use the not potatoes to get the extra sauce?

I went to dinner with strangers! It was through that site chowhound and we went to this great asian restaurant (Biang) where we had bbq seitan, shredded tofu salad, hand pulled veggie noodles, veggie dumplings and they ordered a few other omni dishes. It was a lot of fun and so delicious...!

    1. We only use the toaster oven here, it doesnt do well by Potatoes. The Potatoes at the buffet were decent enough, but, yeah, they made about $20 off me that day.

So brave of you to do a Chowhound get together. Was it your first? think you will do it again?

  4. The grits do look very good! my oldest friend had a bridal shower recently and my brunch meal looked a lot like this - fruits and a mini bagel. I however did not have to pay $28.95 for it!
The veggie delite dish looks legit though. This post makes me want to go back to the vegetarian Jamaican place in Brooklyn...

    1. No Caribbean places in Queens? Thought you had every ethnicity represented there.

  5. I agree, you don't need a theme for your posts! I just love seeing what island life is like! And I live vicariously through you because it is still damn cold here. Definitely not worth the money for the buffet but hopefully the Mr. made up for you a little. Glad you at least had some grits to enjoy. I also find it strange that they wouldn't have mango. The juices look really great too!
