While the weekend breakfast scene has pushed me to the point of thinking about regressing to vegetarianism, the salad front has been sensational on the island...
At Duffy's Love Shack: Mixed Greens topped with Marinated Hearts of Palm, Artichoke Hearts, Tomatoes and Red Onions...
At St. Thomas Yacht Club: Arugula topped with Grilled Artichokes, Tomatoes, Onions, Dried Cranberries and Slivered Almonds...
At The Pie Whole: Romaine, Tomatoes, Onions and Mushrooms...
Also from Dorene's: Mixed Greens topped with Spiralized Zucchini, Carrots and Squash along with Tomatoes, Asparagus, Slivered Onions, Roasted Sweet Red Peppers, Artichokes and Toasted Almonds...
at Fresh Bistro: Fresh Greens with Red Onion, Cucumber, Tomato and Dijon Vinaigrette...
At XO Bistro: Mixed Greens with Blacked Tofu, Craisins and Spiced Almonds (which I am doubtful were vegan)...
For $5, I thought I would give their Bloody Mary a try and it was very good. I might finally be 'getting it' with regards to the popularity of this cocktail...
the best Salad on the Island, IMO, at Mafolie: The Mango Avocado Salad with Star Fruit Vinaigrette. Always with the Mango and Avocado at perfect ripeness....
Certainly more salads than usual. Not many seem to have much protein though! Are they filling enough?
ReplyDeleteThe arugula salad with cranberries and almonds is so delicate and pretty. Doreen's looks like they know what they are doing too.
I used to love Bloody marys but it's been a long while since i've had one. They are almost a meal in themselves.
Are the Salads filling enough? Indeed they are. My portion sizes are still ridiculous down here.
DeleteI'm sorry things have been so rough for you there food-wise. Are you really considering giving up veganism?
ReplyDeleteI am not giving up. It is just surprising to me still to read menus where there is not a single thing on it that isnt an animal product or derived from an animal. It just got to me recently, but i am okay now after some good old introspection.
DeleteIt's really disappointing, in this day and age, they don't have more to offer vegans. Things changed pretty quickly around here though, so maybe the vegan boom is coming? I hope so. I'm constantly amazed by how far things have come overall. When I was a kid, it was harder to be a vegetarian than it is for me to be a vegan now. In the 90's, vegetarianism wasn't even understood and was almost seen as some kind of weird cult. All I could eat at restaurants were salads or maybe a sandwich.
DeleteTotally the same for me. Vegetarians were total weirdos when I was a kid. Can see how others would cave and go back to eating meat just to avoid all the hassling. Oh how awesome it was when Frozen Veggie Burgers hit the aisles.
DeleteYes! My mother used to order TVPs (textured vegetable protein) through a catalog. She worked her magic on them and made great dishes, but it wasn't nearly as easy as it is today.
DeleteYour Mom sounds much more open minded than mine. Although, I will give my Mother credit for making huge pots of Lentil Soup during my high school years.
DeleteShe was supportive right off the bat, even when others said I was just going through a phase (I was eleven). Several years ago, she went vegetarian herself. She wanted to make sure I was getting all the nutrients I need. Clearly, I wasn't thinking about that sort of thing at that age.
DeleteYou are so lucky. My parents tried to force me to eat meat (age 12). They had me later in life so they were not open minded and didnt have the energy to make an effort in regards to pretty much anything, let alone someone not eating meat. It wasnt till Bill Clinton, Natalie Portman, Ellen etc became vegan that my mother started bragging to her friends that her daughter was vegan.
DeleteWow, that's awful. And you stuck with it like you have! That's a testament to your character.
DeleteOh and how I hate the "going through the phase" thing and people that "used to be" vegetarian.
DeleteI hear you. The worst is when someone who used to be vegetarian or vegan is very loud about saying how it's impossible, how it made them sick, how you need meat, etc.
DeleteYep. I told someone I have poor facial recognition and was advised that maybe it was because I didnt eat meat. Um... yeah....Will never forget the person yelling "you need meat to live!" they were a moron.
DeleteWow, that is pretty ignorant of them.
DeleteWell it was fun having a 'live chat' on the blog. Thanks! hope you set up a blog of your own one day. TTYL!
DeleteAll of those salads look so beautiful!Especially the salads from Doreen's. Salads and sandwiches are two things I always enoy more when made by someone else. I like that there are so many different flavors and textures!
ReplyDeleteI still have never had blackened tofu!!
I cant believe you have never had Blackened Tofu. That is something I enjoyed back in Virginia quite often. Should be easy to come by in Seattle.
DeleteOooh all of those salads look so good! Nice and colorful and fresh. I'm sure that is refreshing in the heat. How did you like the combination of avocado and mango? i've heard it is really nice but have never tried it yet.
ReplyDeleteThe Mango and Avocado go together swimmingly;-) You would love it. Maybe someplace in Florida will offer something similar? Or you could make it yourself fo your friends.
DeleteThose salads from Dorene's look the best to me- lots of yummy stuff on top! That one with tofu triangles looks great too. $5 bloody marys??! You know i'm a big fan of those.
ReplyDeleteIf flexing your vegan status to vegetarian makes you happy and improves the quality of your weekends then i think it's worth considering
Ttrockwood
You know I was thinking of you while sipping my Bloody Mary. Just wasnt engaging in any sparkling repartee at the time as you would be doing. I have given it deep thought and I will continue to do the Grits, Fruit, Smoothies and Bagels on the weekends. I will find a way to jazz them up or something.
DeleteWarm weather and salads go together so well, I can imagine that explains your great success! Lots delicious, vibrant veggies!
ReplyDeleteI'm really sad to know that only one Downton Abbey episode remains...
They are wrapping up Downton way too quickly. I dont know why it has to end? Another year at least could be tacked on without quality going down, IMO.
DeleteI'd heard it was supposed to end with season 4, so i think we already had our bonus.
DeleteI wish I could send you an assortment of By Chloe's salads!
