After safely discarding the black 'eyes' and all pink parts of six Ackees, I boiled the yellow flesh for ten minutes to remove the toxins...
after boiling it does look like scrambled eggs, but tastes more like Silken Tofu...
the Fried Potatoes on the side were picked up at Fruit Bowl last month...
Masquerade Potatoes are new to me. Tasted just like Yukon Golds...
I had the leftover Scrambled Ackee on Toast the next day. I see no reason whatsoever to ever buy Ackee again. Totally tasteless and not worth the risk of Jamaican Vomiting Sickness.
Last night I enjoyed the Fair bought Mac & Cheese alongside a Veggie Ball from N'Thing But The Veggie. The Mac & Cheese was really light. No idea how they made it...
still enjoying snacking on the Ju Ju Plums and Hibiscus...
Cute little plums and reading about the hibiscus was so interesting! I didn't know you could eat them, but they're very pretty.
ReplyDeleteBummer about the ackee, looks like it was a bit of work. They looked cool too at first, like little aliens with those black eyes. I'd be afraid to cut them up.
You can buy canned Ackee at a Caribbeean or Jamaican grocery. I believe you have access to that in Queens. Not that I am recommending it.
DeleteThe ackee really does look like egg! Too bad it didn't taste good and that's crazy that there is such a risk when eating them! Definitely not worth it if it doesn't taste great but at least you satisfied your curiosity. The Mac n cheese looks amazing though!!

ReplyDeleteImagine all the folks who found out the hard way that Ackee cant be eaten raw. Even throwing out the non-edible parts scared me. Critters might get into the trash. No composting this stuff,
DeleteWow, it sounds like it was good to experience ackee, but it definitely feels pointless. But man does it look like scrambled eggs! Hibiscus is very high in vitamin c, and also really good for high blood pressure.

I was surprised about the Hibiscus being eaten raw as well. Just assumed it was used in drinks. So refreshing. Surprised it isnt on any restaurant menus.
DeleteHhhmm. Too bad about the ackee after going to that trouble. I've seen it canned but have never been brave enough to try it. What a great find with the mac and cheese! Yummm. Those little plums are so charming!
