Food & Critters

Starting with the food...Brooks Bar and Restaurant gets raves on Yelp...
service was friendly and the drinks were strong (Cruzan Rum and Pineapple). The vegan meal they put together just for me (Rice, Black Beans and Salad) was greatly appreciated, but I think this is more of a seafood place...

the Critters part of the post...
if I didnt already have seven...
below is a Tofutti Cream Cheese with locally grown Cucumber on a toasted Everything Bagel that was outrageously fantastic if I do say so myself...
Last week, we stopped into Coconuts Bar and Grill in Charlotte Amalie for a drink and a bite...
it is hard to see, but the place is lined with dollar bills that patrons have written on...
a House Salad (no cheese) with Oil and Vinegar was the only vegan option (they were out of Portobello Mushrooms). It was extremely fresh and crisp...
all the food is prepared in this itty bitty kitchen. It is incredible to me the restaurant can turn out so many things from such a tiny space...
and here is an Egret we spotted by the cemetery in town...
just hangin out...
Tons more food and critters to share. Bye for now.

  1. The everything bagel with tofutti cream cheese and cucumber is a blast from the past! I actually learned to love that and also scallions with cream cheese and a bagel from your blog! Ahhh memories! It's good that you can at least find some vegan options when you go out.

  2. Well, at least the rice and beans were vegan...i have 50/50 success with yelp reviews.
How are your kitties?? Are they enjoying island life finally?
Nice bagel! That's exciting you can get them. I guess if the drinks at Coconuts were good enough the basic salad is forgivable, but they could have at least added some canned beans or avocado...
Brunching was actually one of the crazy cart lady dim sum places in chinatown -they even had the puffy tofu thing i like. I'm going to Wassail thurs pm, it's a bar with tons of hard ciders and an all veg*n menu!

    1. The barn cats in the guest bedroom are still shy about leaving the guest room. I am not pushing them out of their comfort zone. Gotta admit, these Bagels from Cost-U-Less are pretty decent. Way to huge though. Can only do half at a time but they come pre-split which is nice. I love Dim Sum.

    2. P.S. What did you order at Wassail? nothing on the menu appeals to me that much.

    3. Oh, it was yummy! We went all mushrooms since both of us love them- the mushroom escabeche (lightly pickled), the sourdough bread , the matsutake dish, and the lobster mushroom pasta which sounded weird on the menu yet was excellent- pasta made in house and a ton of mushroomy flavor. And i had the NY state cider flight and then a glass of a pear cider....

  3. Talk about necks that just won't quit!

The look on Egret's face is like "Hey, you gotta problem?"

The salad and rice offerings look quite fresh and crunchy...a good splash of hot sauce and I'd be happy.

Speaking of hot sauce, is the traditional food there spicey?

    1. The native cuisine isnt spicy, but hot sauce is a major 'thing' here. People scarf up tons of Scotch Bonnets at the farmers markets and everybody has their own blend of hot sauces. Some of the bottles are really impressive. Too nice to use.

  4. Ooooh where did you score the bagel?! I bet it was nice to have :) Still my favorite, hopefully the tofutti didn't cost an arm and a leg. The salad does look nice and fresh and I guess at least they were able to make a nice plate of rice and beans and salad for you. The critters are too cute! The kitty is so sweet :)

    1. There are bagel type places on the island, but I think they all get the bagels from Cost-U-Less where I buy mine. Six huge ones for $3.29. Not as great as NYC bagels but better than most frozen brands.

  5. I don't care how fresh and crispy that salad was; you must be wasting away if that's all you got in the VI!!

    1. I would love to waste away. Those are just examples of the reasonably sized portions I have encountered here.
