The Pie Whole

I guess I will start off this new blog with where we had lunch today: The Pie Whole, in Frenchtown....
They have a $15 in 15 minute lunch special where you get a Salad and Pizza or Pasta for $15... I had the 'Pie House' Salad - Romaine, Tomato, Onions and Mushrooms with Balsamic Vinaigrette...
and the 'Spicy SDT' Pasta - Sundried Tomato, Garlic, Crushed Red Pepper, Onions, Pine Nuts and Capers sauteed with Extra Virgin Olive Oil....excellent in all aspects -- food, ambience, service...
returning home after lunch, we saw this Red Footed Tortoise a block from our house....
he was crossing the street, and while it is not busy, I hopped out of the car and carried him to our yard. He never retreated into his shell, and started wandering away as soon as I set him down...
other thrills today included seeing this little fella on the side of the house...
and coming across a herd of Hermit Crabs cleaning up spilled Chicken feed...
they not-so-quickly retreated back into the leaves as I got closer...
the header pic on the blog is taken from our deck this morning. Those are the Inner and Outer Brasses and a few people do actually live on the other side of them...who are these people????
Oh well. Bye for now.

  1. Yaaaaaaasssss!!!! I don't even know where to begin with this! First, I'm glad Mr. SVeg (Mr. VIVI?) liked the name! That lunch looks really good! I love that they included mushrooms in a house salad. The pasta looks really great too. And the fact that the place is called The Pie Whole is kind of hilarious and awesome.

I LOOOOOOVE all of the critter pics! That turtle is so freaking cute. I love turtles and that little guy is awesome. Maybe he'll be back to visit. Love that you were able to get a lizard pic of your own! And the hermit crabs are awesome.

I can't deal with your view. I think you are my hero right now, haha! I'm so glad that you are settling in and enjoying it now!

    1. I am starting to become my own hero a little bit as well. Usually I fail miserably when I try to change my life. So far (day 4 1/2) things are going well

  2. What a change!! So glad you are happy with the food. my impression about islands like this is that they thrive on tourism so whether you live there or not people are trying very hard to make the customers happy.
The turtle is adorable. And the salamander too. No longer will you have to wait for Sarah's yearly trip to see amphibians on the side of houses.
I'm with Sarah ! Are we still supposed to say mr. SV? Are you even Shen anymore? this is such a change for us all.

    1. I have no idea what I should be called anymore. The email address for blogspot is still Shenandoah Vegan. Any and all suggestions for a new moniker are welcome.

  3. What an adorable place for lunch! I hope you just mean they bring the food quickly and not that they hussle you out quickly.
I think those hermit crabs creep me out a little bit...do they bite??!

Your view is rediculous. It looks pretty high up too, good call on the Mr's part with the Jeep. Will you take your laptop to the beach to do work? Or is your new home office the deck? I hope you have a bucket of sunscreen to dunk yourself in daily. And i'm with FF, in my head your name is Shen!

    1. The Pie Whole paced the meal pefectly. they only have about 20 seats and only one server, but he was a pro. Sorry the Hermit Crabs creep you out. I am utterly thrilled with them. I never expected them so they are like lots of little pets. I think I will need to stay in the house to telecommute, but there is an electrical outlet on the deck so....Maybe...yes, I need a new moniker! Help!

  4. Your pictures of the hermit crabs eating chicken feed, then scuttling off just made them my favorite creature. Incredible new home, incredible you did the move with such a big animal family. That's dedication and love!

    1. Varg, like I said above, these Hermit Crabs are blowing my mind. Who knew they ate chicken feed? and that there were so many in one area? In the past, I have come across a single small one here and there, but never like I have seen here. It was incredible I moved this family. Most everyone I encountered before, during and after the move have been incredulous.

  5. THOSE people are wondering who YOU are, I'll bet!

    1. Ha! Well these folks on the Brasses are living off the grid, so they probably do have time to wonder about a lot of stuff.

  6. Love that view! Has it really settled in now, that you live here?! The Pie Whole looks so delicious. It's good to know that you'll have this place in your pocket when you're in the mood for Italian.

Do they have mini grocers or markets? I'm guessing that Amazon still ships there, seeing as the islands belong to the U.S., so you can at least order hard to find staples in the event the islands can't provide it.

I say, kayak over to those islands and find out who lives there! ;)

  7. Thankfully, I am settling in, cuz it was hell getting here and it would be hell getting back. There are grocery stores that I will show, with a substantial supply of vegan goods, however, the cost of Peanut Butter is outrageous (I use it to give the Pups their meds). I originally planned to kayak and paddleboard all over, but so far, I dont even know how to get to the beach on my own. Too terrified to drive on the left.
