Brewers Bay Chili Fest

Today was the 31st Annual Texas Society of the Virgin Islands Chili Cookoff and yours truly was there to see what it was all about. The 'kick-off' is when they play the Star Spangled Banner on steel drums...
these ladies kindly explained the drill to me: $1 per ticket for a taste of Chili or a drink....
the drink I got, however, was $4/four tickets. It was called a 'Walk The Plank' and was in a keepsake plastic bucket the same size as the buckets they give you in casinos to hold your coins....
I said I would feel silly walking around drinking out of a bucket, but they told me to 'own it' so I did. No straws either because of that poor Equadorian Sea Turtle that was in the news this week. Seriously, that is what they said...
another fun tent...
this Hound Dog Green Veggie Chili was a little too Eggplanty for me...
wearing a grass skirt is a fun idea...
after consuming a good amount of my drink, I got the great idea to carry my bucket like a bucket ...
this Chili was pretty decent...
Heidi's Honeymoon Grill had the most elaborate set up...
their Chili was good...
but, alas, none that I tried could hold a candle to Black Bear Bistro's Vegan Chili. I am spoiled for good I suppose..
prior to the Chili Fest, I was at the Havensight Farmers Market. There was Soursop and Sugar Apple for sale this week, but I wasnt feeling brave enough to try....
Bye for now.

  1. I've never heard of either of those fruits. But my real question is did yo ever finish your bucket?

    1. I almost finished the bucket and was very surprised there wasnt a 'cop presence' waiting for people leaving the festival.

  2. Okay this place is a vegan feeding oasis! I thought most chili cook offs only offer one, if any, veggie options. Those ladies are hilarious, I love that they encouraged you to 'own' the bucket! hahaha...

    1. Their advice to 'own' the bucket really worked for me. I was not gonna let the fact that I was drinking out of a plastic bucket in any way diminish my good time.

  3. A bucket of booze sounds good to me.

    Tropical paradise seems pretty vegan-friendly.

  4. Your drink is SO hysterical!!! And $4???! Amazing. There must have been many others with the same bucket drink- too funny. And i love that it's pink!

Those chilis all sound good (although i'm sure the spice would kill me), what a great variety and a wonderful way to spend the afternoon....
I'd try the sugar apple and get another papaya (soursop sounds....sour)

I've been outside as much as i can be lately- summer is almost over!- went to long island and kyacking with a friend for the afternoon, she made us a wonderful vegan lunch (even tho she is omni) with veggies from her yard, i made and brought fennel fig seedy crackers. Biking down the CA coastline next weekend:)

    1. I didnt see anyone else with a bucket that i recall. Although that could be due to the effects of the bucket's contents.

I will get a Sugar Apple and report on the experience.

Are there rivers on Long Island to kayak or were you in the ocean?

Be careful biking in CA! i remember that you got a nasty sunburn last year (hey, maybe it will rain and you wont be able to go biking! Naahhhh)

  5. How cool that the island has a chili cook off - with tents and a bucket beverage!! Ha ha! So awesome! Surely they'd let you order the chili from Black Bear Bistro online, and cover the cost of shipping, no? It's worth a try!

    1. Getting anything shipped here is remarkably difficult, let alone a quart of Chili, but I admire your spirit!

  6. OK that drink is AMAZING and so hilarious!! I would totally rather have a bucket of a drink and a little sample of chili ;) Can you make your own chili? I know you have in the past and it always looks good. Is there a special seasoning mix or packet that you use for yours that you can't get?

  7. That shot with the chili and the bucket is the best! Was it an all vegan competition?
