Ma's Vegi Deli

Ma's Vegi Deli is a clean and friendly place outside of Red Hook (where you catch the ferry to/from St. John)...
we had breakfast inside this morning...
I opted for Sorrell as my local drink. Tasted like Grape Hi-C. Meaning 'very good'....
Ma's appears to do a big business in these Johnny Cakes and Stuffed Patties...
tried to get a pic of the menu...
front and back!
we both got the Tofu Scramble with Potatoes and a Johnny Cake (fried bread, hard to go wrong there)...
biodegradable containers and utensils have not made it down here. So much styrofoam and plastic is used everywhere, even when dining in...
Dinner for tonight was carried out from Ma's last night. The local custom is to pick a Large or Small serving size and the Protein is ladeled in on top of the starch in the appropriately sized styrofoam container. This is Chili and Gluten atop Rice and Potatoes respectively. Gotta work hard to avoid all the Rice they serve down here...
below is a pic of our house from the street. It is modest, but has the million dollar view and I wanted to be surrounded by lush tropical vegetation....
here is a pic of the road going up from our house. You cant gauge the steepness from the photo or that there is no room to get traction before heading practically straight up...
the Feed Store in Coki Beach where I got Mash for the chickens (like I said, information dump happening)...
Molly in the kitchen...
All the critters needed health certificates to come down here. While undergoing her exam last week, it was discovered that Buttercup needed serious dental work, so we took her to Imperial Animal Hospital this afternoon. She was rolling around on the exam table before the doctor came in...
I sure will be happy when I no longer have to get cats in carriers. Bye for now.

  1. Awww I love kitty pictures when their lil tongues are sticking out!! I should take Hax to the dentist too.
Is the Johnny Cake crispy? It looks mega fried. Nice vegan options though - there are some Caribbean places around here that make similar looking (delicious) stuff. I think I've seen sorrel soda too but never drank it. I have had a gingery sea moss one though!

    1. Had I not moved down here, I would never have taken Buttercup to the vet. She gave no indication of discomfort. Now she hates me even more when I try to squirt antibiotics in her mouth. The Johnny Cake was more chewy than crispy. i think it was fried and then put in that heating unit till i came along to eat it. Sea Moss is on my immediate agenda.

  2. How was the tofu scramble?? Hope it was up to par. Was the fried bread hard? For some reason i'm thinking its a hard bread for dunking in stews...
Sorrell drinks are delicious! There's a small carribean deli/juice bar/salad place in my neighborhood with johnny cakes and fresh tropical juices.
That takeaway dinner looks like a generous and saucey meal- and yeah, good luck avoiding rice.
Your house is adorable! i hope all went well at the kitty dentist and you both got home in one piece.

    1. I did not like you as Anonymous one bit! i dont think I am going to be able to change from Shenandoah Vegan, I will try next week. The Johnny Cake was chewy. Next I want to try the stuffed Patties. I keep asking, 'Is it vegan?' I am hoping they arent lying to me, All this Caribbean cuisine is new to me so I need to take my time ordering in the future.

  3. Your house looks amazing, and what a view! Living in a tropical paradise! I made it to Seattle, and only two of my cats are giving me the evil eye, so I guess I'm doing okay.
    Congrats to us both!!

    1. Definitely congrats to us both. What our fur babies put us through. Surprised you found so few vegan options on the trip. There are always the Bean Burritos at Taco Bell (no cheese). i think i would opt for those over Subway these days. At least you and the crew are safe and sound.

  4. My cat is from the Virgin Islands. King Street Cats has a program where people flying back from VI take a kitty with them, saving a life. Kitty then goes into their incredible adoption facility in Alexandria VA. My cat has an unusual looking face; apparently a lot of cats from VI look slightly different.

    1. I was aware of that situation going on with flying the homeless animals back to the states. They dont let animals fly during the summer months (good thing). A lot of people kept telling me i couldnt fly my pets down because of that, but I would never put my animals on cargo. I havent seen but a handful of cats down here (another good thing). The vet said cats on the island often have little clouds in their eyes from lizards spitting at them. That was news to me. Great job adopting an island kitty!

  5. At least you don't have to shovel snow with a road like that! Bummer about the styrofoam. I've had sorrel fresh as a salad, never thought it could be a sweet drink. What does sea moss taste like?

    1. Good point about the snow. I hadnt thought of that. The trash issues are really bad down here. Sea Moss is next on my agenda.

  6. Hmm... I wonder why the biodegradable containers haven't made it there? I have to wonder if it is an island culture thing. A friend of mine lived in American Samoa for two years, and she noticed the same thing. Different part of the world, but a similar island issue. How weird would it be to bring in your own containers?

Your house is really cute. I, too, love vegetation surrounding a property and am mourning a large tree that was in my neighbor's backyard, which provided a lot of shade and beauty, it died and was cut down last week. I still don't have a/c (10 days after the flood!), so without that tree my house heats up quickly!

    1. I think it would be bad to bring my own containers just cuz they make such an issue with regard to pricing the food based on the size of the styrofoam container. They might think I am trying to rip them off. I did order some glass straws, but all the packaging with those probably evens out to the amount of plastic straws used in the end. Ten days without A/C?! Hope your electric bill reflects that.

  7. Oooh yum!! That breakfast looks incredible. That johnny cake looks so good and you are so right, definitely hard to go wrong with fried bread ;) I keep forgetting you don't like rice!!

Your house looks so lovely! I love how lush it looks and your view is so incredible. Yes, the hill seems a bit treacherous but at least you don't have to drive it in snow!!

Love critter pics :) Once the kitties forget about the trip they'll be happy again. Especially because their new home is so beautiful!

Have you found any cool tropical produce yet? I think you are going to be making a lot of people jealous with that!

    1. I will try to remember the no snow on the hill thing. It is good advice. . am hoping to get to a farmers market tomorrow. There are also little roadside stands that sell Mangos and Plaintains that I guess people grow in their yards. I hope to stop at one to see what those are about as well (stopping on the road is another issue in itself).
